KAROLA LÜTTRINGHAUS tour schedule | about us | repertoire | press & references| contact | videos | teaching | visual art | home TEACHIN PHILOSOPHY - and class descriptions Teaching Philosophy - Karola Luttringhaus I want to share my passion for expression through movement. I am interested in the psychology of movement. I believe that every movement has a meaning to the individual and universally. I explore the movement's origin what changes or alters its meaning to me or others and what remains constant. Dance technique is an important part of the road to full expression but for me it is always intertwined with our motivations and inspirations. I come from a Graham background and incorporate my interpretation of principles of her teachings into my classes. As a dancer I have come to appreciate release technique as a means to move the body efficiently, achieve a very powerful yet relaxed look, and to prevent injury. Release inspired exercises have become an important element in my classes. The principles behind my teaching have been shaped through working with my company, therefore articulating and reflecting the company's and my unique choreographic style with a strong emphasis on the ultimate goal: to perform on stage. I love and embrace the opportunity, as a dancer and choreographer, to show people how strong and physically capable women really are. It is part of my mission, responsibility and heart felt desire to strengthen the image of women as physically powerful, self-determined and eloquently expressive individuals through the portrayal of strong and emotionally complex female characters in my dance works and through teaching. My work is firecely physical, athletic and emotional. My approach is honest and always connects to something real; even if the topic is completely surreal. Class Description Modern Technique: Modern Technique/Partnering: Class begins with a warm up that focuses on releasing tension, grounding and lenghtening by finding the source of energy in the spine, center and breath. Exercises which are all-directional and use inversions challenge the body to think quickly and help translate movement ideas into action with ease and confidence. Class is founded on the basis of creating dances with meaning. Through breath and intention we deepen the body’s ability to move more efficiently through time and space, always respecting one’s physical and emotional well-being. Dance phrases move cross, to and from the floor, using the hands as a weight-bearing source. We strengthen the upper body through exercises and elements of partnering. The class culminates in an athletic phrase, sometimes sections of alban elved dance company’s repertory, which emphasize dynamic physicality, risk-taking, expression, performance quality and personality. I encourage individualism and freedom within the given exercises. We seek to find the essence and meaning of a movement from the inside out instead of copying shapes and lines. We explore meaning and execution of movement in realation to intention, facial expression and the psychology of body language. Technique is understood as a means to an end: to perform on stage. Movement is discovered in relationship to momentum, intention, quality, space and personality. Phrases rarely focus on counts but rather on inner timing, musicality and on being in tune with and attentive to the other dancers around us. Class Description Modern Dance (beginner): Karola is offering a beginning level dance class with an emphasis on moving with ease, efficiency and fluidity. Classes are geared towards giving the student the skills and confidence to achieve or even approach dynamic and expressive dance movements. Class Description Floor Barre (beginner to intermediate): This "ballet barre on the floor" builds core strength, muscle toning, articulation and coordination of the body. It is an excellent workout for professionals as well as nondancers/beginners. The floor barre principles will be applied in a short traditional ballet barre at the end of class. Floor barre builds the foundation for proper dance alignment and is good for injury prevention or during recovery. Class Description Intro to Rope and Harness: We use rope and harness work to add new dimension to contemporary dance. We will teach basic principles of rope and harness work, like spinning, climbing, descending, running with the rope, swinging and stopping. We are particularly looking at how to gain the most control over the medium, so we can ultimately put it in the context of performance and expression. The class starts with an easy warm up. Through shorter and longer choreographed sequences to music we will try to come as close to flying as possible. Within the workshop we will explore different rope set-ups, combinations of on / off rope partnering unison work as well as some improvisation. (If you own a harness and carabiners (regular mountain climbing equipment), please bring them. Otherwise we will provide equipment. You will need: sneakers that don’t leave black marks on the floor, a tight layer of pants and a loose layer such as regular sweatpants. No jewelry please!) Class Description Rope and Harness Repertory Class: Previous aerial experience required. Much like a rehearsal of the company, this class focuses on the creation of a piece. We will learn sections of the company’s repertoire demonstrated by the instructors. You will learn how to make adjustments to your body to achieve a copy of the movement. If needed, the class will start with a short warm-up and then we will delve right into the creative process. While some of the movement is from the company’s repertoire, we will also create some new work under the direction of the artistic director. There will be a formal/informal performance at the end of the two-week workshop. The company’s work is very physical, incorporates lots of partnering and requires strength; but don’t hesitate, as you will love to experience how strong you actually are and how much fun it is to dance on this equipment. (If you own a harness and carabiners (regular mountain climbing equipment), please bring them. Otherwise we will provide equipment. You will need: sneakers that don’t leave black marks on the floor, a tight layer of pants and a loose layer such as regular sweatpants.) alban elved dance company/KAROLA LUTTRINGHAUS Berlin - New York City - North Carolina albanelved@triad.rr.com copyright: alban elved dance company/KAROLA LUTTRINGHAUS - all rights reserved Web design by [mad duck productions] |
