PIECE DESCRIPTION:

"ANIMATE" (at SECCA, Southeastern Center for Contemporary Art)

Artistic director/Choreography/concept: Karola Lüttringhaus
Dance: Andrea Lieske, Karola Luttringhaus, Brea Cali, Kennis Hawkins, Stephanie Moore, Kathleen Hahn, Brooke Hannum, Allyn Rubright
Music: Joe Morgan, live performed

SECCA closed its "Homegrown I" Exhibition with a series of performances of Winston-Salem's alban elved dance company. Led by NC School of the Arts Graduate, Karola Luttringhaus, alban elved was formed in Berlin, Germany and has made its home in Winston-Salem since last year. Hallmarks of the company's recent work include live music and the dramatic utilization of architectural spaces. At SECCA, dancers performed works that accentuated SECCA's cavernous Main Gallery, using climbing gear to accentuate the upper reaches of the space.
Dancers inhabited the space at SECCA indoors and outdoors. Thrilling physicality and graceful control on the ground, dancing on walls, roofs and in the air This is a totally different, exciting and unusual gallery experience. It excites a very broad audience, little children to seniors, and people from all walks of life.

The set features alban elved's new 15-foot tall steel structure.
