Art. & Exec.

- Come in under the Shadow of this Red Rock“).

Musician / Composer:
Bill Donovan (aka Donovan Quixote)

Wilmington-based musician Bill Donovan , (aka: Donovan Quixote), has been playing music since 8 years old. Some of his earliest dabblings in music included sitting at the family piano and letting his fingers fall wherever they may onto the keys in block "chords" while pressing the foot pedal and listening to the chords resonate into silence. (Almost 20 years later he would discover this is known as Deep Listening, a popular meditative process.) Picking up traditional rock instruments in his teens, he taught himself to play by learning his favorite songs by ear, usually thrash metal and classic rock. An early introduction to hip-hop instilled in him a love for a well-made beat and sound collage, or sampling. The discovery of free jazz and drone music seemed to combine all of these themes, and an obsession for film soundtracks has established a compulsion to involve mood and a sense of place in his music. Donovan's sound is always evolving, but it consistently envelopes these influences into a sound that is charming yet challenging; to be listened to, not merely heard.

Since moving to the area from upstate New York in 1998, Donovan has been active in local music circles playing various roles in a variety of bands and improvisational combos. Current projects include a full album remix (or "re-imagination") for acclaimed jazz saxophonist Matt Criscuolo, as well as treatments of singles by rising stars Onward, Soldiers, and Big Al Hall. Donovan is also in the midst of composing and recording his own collection of "pop" songs, and a sequel to 2009's surreal art piece "Busy Fleas". After finishing classes at Cape Fear Community College, Donovan aspires to pursue ethnomusicology; to travel and record the wonderful musics in smaller corners of the world that are too often overlooked.
