Moving Poets closed their seventh season with the highly anticipated world premiere of 1001 Arabian Nights. The world's greatest tale has begun: the first of 1001, told by a young woman as clever as she was beautiful. As timeless as the Arabian dunes, this spell-binding work has changed the world of story-telling forever.

1001 Arabian Nights is a cornucopia of some of the world’s most famous tales, exciting all the senses. It has inspired great artists through the centuries, from Chaucer and Robert Louis Stevenson to Chagall and Matisse. The story unfolds when the betrayed King Shahriyar vows to have a new wife each night, with each to be executed the following morning. Sheherazade, when her turn came, enacted a clever plan to tell an enticing tale. The king became so entranced by Sheherazade’s stories that he would long to hear the conclusion, and night after night she would leave him in suspense, thus earning herself a further stay of execution…. Moving Poets production of Arabian Nights is not a simple retelling, but a unique new work inspired by the original. Through contemporary dance, aerial dance, music and theater, it creates a highly charged world of love, magic and wonder, that will engage and spell-bind the audience. Just like King Shahriyar was by Sheherazade and her stories.

Arabian Nights marks Moving Poets’ first collaboration with alban elved dance company, bringing together both organization’s artists and creative forces. alban elved is a breathtaking, Winston Salem based contemporary dance group specializing in interweaving dance with athletic aerial work. Moving Poets’ Artistic Director/ Choreographer, Till Schmidt-Rimpler and alban elved’s Artistic Director/Choreographer Karola Lüttringhaus team up to explore and defy theatrical and choreographic territories. Set to a surreal back drop including lush colors, exotic scents and sensual aerial fabric, Arabian Nights will bounce from breath taking athleticism to passionate love and humorous absurdity. The rich musical score is especially created for this work and includes compositions by Daveed Korup, inspired by Middle Eastern percussion. It will be performed live by Moving Poets’ musicians.
